Kindergarten prep through 5th Grade

ELEMENTARY

It’s important to instill a love for learning! HCLA’s Christ-centered instruction provides a loving, safe, and nurturing environment where children grow – both spiritually and academically – while developing a quest for knowledge, biblical truths, and the ability to problem solve and create solutions.

We are excited for your student to participate in this program!  Our 3rd graders will be introduced to this new program to fuel their independence and creativity and set them up for innovative learning in the future!  During the school year they will create a STEAM project and present it at the STEAM Symposium at the end of the school year. The STEAM Team at Siemen’s Energy will be visiting our 3rd graders four times throughout the year (once a quarter) to ignite their enthusiasm and curiosity for renewable energy and explore ways they can impact our world. They will have the opportunity to explore turbines via virtual reality and understand literally how the lights come on with their own wind kit.  Siemens’ Steam Team will also support our students advising and guiding them on their own Steam projects that they are developing.   Full STEAM ahead!

KINDERGARTEN prep

MORE THAN PRESCHOOL! Kindergarten Prep is a full- academic school day integrated in our Elementary Program.  This class is designed for mature 4 year olds to get a head start on their educational journey at HCLA.  Utilizing the foundation of a Kindergarten curriculum, an Elementary Education teacher will introduce students to literary and mathematical concepts.  Students will also learn the important developmental skills such as working with others, communicating with peers and adults.  Students in our Kindergarten Prep class will get priority Kindergarten enrollment the following year.

KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten is a year of tremendous growth as students delve into rich literacy experiences designed to inspire readers, writers and life-long learners.  Throughout the year students will also be challenged to explore new mathematical concepts, thematic units, and biblical stories to expand their understanding of the world around them.

1ST GRADE

First graders build on the reading, writing and mathematical foundation of Kindergarten by expressing their independence in these academic areas.  Understanding that each child is a unique child of God, teachers place a large emphasis on differentiation of instruction in both whole and small groups to further each child’s growth and discovery.

2ND GRADE

Second grade students move toward becoming responsible curious learners.  Challenged to develop critical thinking skills in all academic subject areas, students develop creative ways to solve problems through creative and innovative classroom experiences.  They begin to demonstrate their love for Jesus and others by sharing His grace and mercy while respecting and serving one another.

3RD GRADE

Third grade students enjoy the dynamic shift from learning to read, to reading to learn.  A strong emphasis on reading and writing enhances their ability to conduct science explorations and historical reporting.   The students learn to walk daily with God in and beyond the classroom as they participate in their service learning project.

4TH GRADE

Fourth Grade students are independent and confident as they begin departmentalizing for their core subjects and rotate amongst their teachers.  This gives them added responsibility and develops necessary organization and time management skills.  Students are encouraged to have a heart for Christ, achieve academic success, connect to their communities and be leaders.

5TH GRADE

Fifth graders are beginning the transition to middle school.  It is a year of leadership opportunities as they continue to develop organizational skills, gain independence and become self-motivated learners.  They conduct science research and have opportunities for advancing in math placement.  It is a year of academic and spiritual development in preparation for middle school.

SPECIALS

A well-rounded student is the most successful!  We teach the whole child – physically, spiritually, and academically.  It is important to us as it is to you that they are exposed to a variety of interests.

y

Music

We strive to nurture a child’s innate love for music and hopefully spark an interest for students to continue music studies with playing an instrument or singing.  Music class focuses on teaching the basics of music theory including notes, rests, meter, and more.  Students experiment with a variety of instruments including keyboard, handbells, percussion, and a plethora of rhythm instruments.  All students learn and perform a musical including drama and music for Christmas and in a worship concert in Spring.

Spanish

Our Elementary Spanish classes consist of utilizing a variety of interactive methods that will help students learn and enjoy Spanish language and culture.   Music, rhyme, dance, movement, reading and other activities are used to spark a love for a lifelong engagement with Spanish.

Physical Education

Our Physical Education department offers  students a wide variety of fitness and recreational skills to promote academic performance and good habits that will last a lifetime. HCLA utilizes the award winning curriculum  SPARK ( Sports, Play, and Recreation for Kids) that allows students to engage in an amazing physically active program in a fun learning environment.  Our bodies are designed to do amazing things so we also promote living a healthy life style to keep this God-given gift in great shape.

Art

Students learn the fundamentals of art through a fun, challenging, and experiential curriculum. Children develop a personal art practice by growing their artistic skill set, learning about the history of art throughout time, and experimenting with a wide variety of materials.  Guided by different engaging themes and lessons each week, children build on their growing skills and understanding of the elements of art to design their own creative compositions and gain confidence as artists. Lessons focus on observation, experimentation, and imagination, given context by studying important artworks and artists throughout time. Lessons also relate to biblical truths and growing in a personal relationship with God. Let’s get messy, gain confidence, and grow as creative souls who love and serve the Lord!
