9TH THROUGH 12TH GRADE

HIGH SCHOOL

you will be transformed

We prepare our students as they journey toward their future so we include Christian values, principles and opportunities for them to connect with their community and the world they live in.  It’s not only important that they complete the required courses, but it is necessary we teach them how to go out into the world and pursue what it takes to live out their purpose.

Our Transformation Program – a program specific to HCLA, prepares them for what lies ahead as Christian leaders. They discover their God-given talents, develop leadership skills, learn the value of teamwork and prepare for their launch into the future.

high school experience

Our students are given many opportunities for class trips, college visits, student government sponsored events, sports and friendships.

We know these things are important for your high school students so we make every effort to provide activities of interest.  We have an environment that allows students to lead the charge to set something in motion to bring different experiences to HCLA.   If they want to start something new, we will provide them support to bring it on campus through Student Government and administration collaboration.

 HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMICS

Holy Cross Lutheran Academy wants to be your first choice in the educational process for your son or daughter! We are dedicated to preparing each student for their next step in life by combining Christian values and nationally recognized curriculum to help them “transform” into a young adult with a purpose.

During their four years at HCLA, they will not only complete the required curriculum areas, but they will earn to combine those areas with a future goal. Through this combination, students work together, maximize their potential, and discover where they would like to be in life.

The high school curriculum includes, Honors and Advanced Placement™ classes, college tours and our signature Transformation Program.

Theology

Students receive a semester of instruction each year in Theology. Our goal is to fully equip students for lifelong growth, tools for discerning truth, evaluating evidence and recognizing Biblical relevance.

Weekly they have chapel on Wednesdays with a small group type environment so they have opportunity to develop their faith and discuss topics relevant to today.

Mathematics

The Math department offers courses ranging from integrated mathematics to AP Calculus. These courses fully meet the needs of any college bound student regardless of his/her aptitude for mathematics and their choice of future study. Math is different for every student; with that being said we encourage each student to sit down with the math instructor each year before selecting a course.

English

Our English department is committed to offering students a strong college preparatory curriculum. We believe that effective and intelligent communication is a vital skill for all students. To that end, we provide integrated instruction in reading, thinking, speaking and writing in the four required English courses. Additionally, all students must complete required yearly reading from the Independent Reading List. Honors and Advanced Placement™ courses are offered to eligible students.

Social Sciences/Humanities

This department not only offers courses required by the State of Florida for graduation, but a curriculum that prepares students for today’s world. A solid foundation in history, comparative cultures, worldviews and government operations, as well as economics round out a student’s perception of the world and prepares him or her to fully participate in society. Electives are offered through this department to round out the curriculum.

Sciences

Holy Cross Lutheran Academy offers a comprehensive and expanding science curriculum that is taught within the framework of our Christian beliefs and includes both classroom lecture and laboratory components. Our graduates find themselves well prepared for the rigors of pursuing careers in the sciences, medicine and engineering. Courses are presented in standard, Honors and Advanced Placement™ levels. Our students are encouraged to complete four credits of science.

Foreign Language

Holy Cross currently offers Spanish as our main foreign language choice based on its wide range of use across our world and in the business arena, especially in our home state of Florida. We do support enrollment in Florida Virtual School (FLVS) for American Sign Language, French and other languages. Students enrolled in FLVS will be provided a period within the schedule to complete the coursework.

PE/Health

The Physical Education Department strives to endow students with the knowledge and experiences to live healthy, productive, Godly lives. Knowing that our bodies are a gift from God and that we are to care for them and make good choices based on Scripture and good practice, students learn how to be physically active, participate in sports and follow good health habits.

COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS

Your actions today set the direction for your future tomorrow!

Our course catalog provides detailed information about each class and lists the requirements for high school graduation and college admission. Each year we will visit with students to help them stay on track for graduation.  Students are ultimately responsible for their success, so it is very important they stay on top of their requirements.  We also know that some students will not attend a 4-year university immediately after high school so we do share information about technical colleges and military options.

SAT Testing

We administer the SAT to Juniors and Seniors on the national in-school testing days.  We also administer the PSAT to 9th and 10th graders and the PSAT/NMSQT to 11th graders.   If your student would like to take the test additional times during the school year, visit The College Board for information on testing locations.

Bright Futures Scholarship

We recommend that students work toward attaining the Bright Futures Scholarship to help pay for college tuition.   To log your volunteer hours, print out and fill out this form.  It is up to the student to record, get the appropriate approval and turn in to the Principal for entry.

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program has helped more than 725,000 Florida students attend a postsecondary institution. The program offers three types of scholarship awards – the Florida Academic Scholars award (FAS), the Florida Medallion Scholarship award (FMS), and the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars award (GSV).

College Visits

Each year we take our high school students on college tours.  This provides them the opportunity to begin thinking about their path and the type of college they might like (small, large, private, public, technical).

We also bring in guest speakers from various career fields to give them insight and real life scenarios of how they got there.  We seek assistance from the community to help us get student shadowing opportunities to help them gain real life insight to a potential career.

Florida Shines

Preparation is key and frequent evaluations of your course load and progress are important.  We require each student to create a FloridaShines account in order to stay up-to-date on college entrance requirements.

AP Courses

Taking Advanced Placement™ (AP) classes also provide college readiness skills and potentially college credit by participating colleges and universities.  Visit the College Board for additional information.

We offer several Advanced Placement™ classes :  Capstone Research, Capstone Seminar, Language, Literature, World History, US History, Psychology, Macro Economics, Statistics, Calculus AB and Calculus BC, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Physics, Studio Art, and Computer Science.
